Bieber Climbs to Top of Bing's Annual Hit Parade

It's hard to top the public's abiding (if baffling) interest in the activities of Kim Kardashian, but Justin Bieber did it, at least according to Bing's almost-year-end roundup of top searches. Bieber dethroned the "reality" star as the most searched-for person in 2011 and didn't even have to get married and divorced to do it. In the news category, searches related to the Casey Anthony trial topped those about the death of Osama Bin Laden. More categories, rankings and info-nuggets are listed in a Bing blog post.

Sales of Apple?s iPhone 4S stall in South Korea as handset is deemed ?uncompetitive?

Sales of Apple’s iPhone 4S have reportedly been surprisingly slow in South Korea, where wireless customers are reportedly disappointed with the phone’s poor performance and lack of features. The Korea Times on Wednesday said that customers are passing on the iPhone due to problems with the phone’s battery life and the lack of support for 4G LTE. The paper reports that pre-sales of the iPhone 4S have totaled between 150,000 and 300,000 units combined at SK Telecom and Korea Telecom, citing unnamed carrier officials in stating that a number of pre-orders have recently been cancelled. Thanks in part to the multitude of mobile apps available across every smartphone platform, consumers seem to be uninterested in the own-brand handset Facebook is reportedly developing ? security concerns may be an issue as well, of course. According to a recent report, Facebook is working with HTC on a new smartphone code-named “Buffy” that will feature a customized version of the Android operating system with deep Facebook integration. The Wall Street Journal’s AllThingsD blog recently conducted a survey to assess interest in the Facebook-branded smartphone, and the results are telling. As of Monday morning, more than 81% of respondents want nothing to do with a Facebook phone. Approximately 11% said they might consider the handset depending on features and

?Inferior products? to blame for weak HTC sales in Q4, Citigroup says

HTC cut its fourth-quarter guidance for the second time earlier this week, sending shares of the company’s stock to their lowest point in more than a year. The Taiwan-based smartphone vendor cut revenue estimates by roughly 23% for the fourth quarter as steep competition from Samsung, Apple and other companies will seemingly make HTC’s run at the top short-lived. But pent up demand for a new iPhone and Samsung’s ongoing charge are only half of the equation according to two Citigroup analysts. HTC’s weak fourth quarter is “driven more by inferior product than by macro reasons,” analysts Kevin Chang and Jonathan Gu wrote in a research note earlier this week according to Bloomberg. “We are most surprised by the lack

First game subscription hits iOS App Store [updated]

Until now, if you wanted to purchase an app on an iPad you had to pay a one-time purchase fee. Now, Apple is opening up its policies a bit to allow developers to create applications that charge monthly subscription fees for access to content. Big Fish Games is the first studio to gain approval from Apple to introduce an app subscription model, Bloomberg said. Big Fish Games will allow iPad owners to pay $4.99 per month for unlimited access to all of its games, and Apple takes a 30% cut of all revenues. “This is the first time that the technology has matched the business model,? Big Fish founder Paul Thelan said. Big Fish said it will also allow users

HTC cuts forecast on competition from Apple and Samsung, reevaluates S3 acquisition

Leading smartphone vendor HTC on Wednesday trimmed its fourth-quarter revenue forecast by roughly 23% as stiff competition from Samsung and Apple has seeming slowed sales. The Taiwan-based company became the No.1 smartphone vendor in the U.S. by shipment volume last quarter, but a six-month string of record revenue came to an end in October following the release of Apple’s highly anticipated iPhone 4S. In light of the new iPhone and Samsung’s recent success in the smartphone space, HTC lowered its fourth-quarter revenue forecast to NT$104 billion from its earlierguidanceof between NT$125 billion and NT$135 billion. Unless things pick up, HTC’s sales will decline sequentially for the first time in two years, Bloomberg reports. HTC said it will also reevaluate its

Samsung ad depicts iPhone owners as mindless hipster sheep [video]

Despite continued confusion, early complaints of weak battery life and a new phone that looks exactly like the previous-generation model, flocks of hipster sheep lined up outside Apple Stores to buy the iPhone 4S simply to be part of the cool crowd. This is the picture Samsung paints in a clever new ad for the Galaxy S II, which is billed as the free thinker’s alternative to Apple’s herd-hooking iPhone. The Samsung Galaxy S II features 4G speeds, a big bright display and a fresh new look, but even though it’s clearly the superior handset from where Samsung is sitting, some Apple fans will never relent. “I could never get a Samsung,” a delusionalbarista mutters in the ad. “I’m creative.”

We’ve been hearing that smartphones will transform into mobile wallets “any year now” for at least the past five years. But with the introduction of the Google Nexus S, Google Wallet, the ISIS initiative, and a handful of smartphones with integrated NFC, it looks like the technology is finally poised to take off. According to Taiwanese phone makers, more than 50% of all smartphones will include NFC within the next 2-3 years. That comes as no surprise: Google’s latest Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) operating system has support for NFC built-in, a number of BlackBerry smartphones offer NFC, the Galaxy S II models on AT&T and T-Mobile have some form of dorment NFC support, and the brand new Samsung Galaxy
